What is lintel | Types of lintels

Hey I am Inam Ullah Author of  https://civilguides.com .this is my first guest post in Hiregrady.com. I would like to thank The author of this blog, Jahid . Thank you Jahid for giving me chance to contribute in your blog. So in this article we are going to talk about The Lintel and The Types of Lintels.

What is Lintel?

Lintel - Lintels

A lintel is just a horizontal participant which is put over the openings like gates, windows etc. It gives assistance and takes the load from the construction above it. It is a type beam, its width is equal-to the thickness of wall,. These are extremely simple to build when compared with arches.

Bearing of lintel:

The bearing provided should be in the following 3 situations ( minimum ).

  1. 10-cm.
  2. Height of beam
  3. 1/10th to 1/12th of cover of the lintel.

Varieties of Lintels found in Building Construction

Lintels are labeled based on the material of design as:

  • Timber lintel
  • Stone lintel
  • Steel lintel
  • Metal Lintel
  • Reinforced concrete lintel
  • Reinforced brick lintel

Timber lintel

In olden times of building, Wood lintels were largely applied. However now a times they’re replaced by many modern tactics, yet in hilly areas these are used. The main disadvantage with wood lintels is that they are less resistant fire.

When the amount of opening is more, then lintel is given by jointing numerous numbers of wooden pieces with the help of material bolts, in case if there are larger surfaces. Lintel is composed of two parts kept far away together with the aid of packaging bits made of wood. Sometimes steels are used to increase strength of wood.
Kinds of Lintels -Timber lintels

Stone Lintels

These will be the most typical kinds of lintels specifically where rock is abundantly available. The widths of these are most important with aspect of its style. These are also furnished on the spaces in stone walls. Stone lintels are provided within the type of either one single piece or more than one-piece.

The height of this type lintel is kept up to 10 cm/meter, having a minimal value of 15 cm. They’re used up to spans of 2 meters. Within the stone lintel due to the poor tensile character, cracks are produced inside the wall.

Brick Lintels

Brick lintels are utilized once the opening is significantly less than 1m and small loads are acting. The height of brick lintel varies from 10 to 20 cm, depending upon the structure. Stones with frogs tend to be more suitable than bricks that have no frog. Because frogs when stuffed with mortar gives more shear weight of end joints. Such lintel is known as joggled.

Reinforced Brick Lintels

If loads are major and span is more than 1m, subsequently reinforced stone lintels are useful. The level of tough stone lintel should be corresponding to 15 cm or 10 cm or multiple of 10-cm. The bricks are thus organized that 2-3 cm space is left lengthwise between nearby bricks for the installation of mild steel bars. 1:3 cement mortars can be used to fill up the empty places. Straight stirrups of 6 mm size are given in every 3rd straight Joints. Main support is provided in the bottom, consists 8 to 10 mm length cafes, which are cranked up at the stops.

Steel Lintels

If the loads are major and spaces are huge then we could opt for steel lintels. These lintels consist of folded steel joists or funnel portions. We could use one single portion or in combinations depending upon necessity.

Metal lintels

currently, the lintels of R.C.C are trusted to cover the openings for gates etc. in a design for their durability, rigidity, fire resistance, economy in construction. R.C.C lintels are suited to any amount and for all the loads. The breadth of lintel is added up to width of wall. Height of lintel depends on the length of Gate and period of running.

Main support is supplied at the end and half of these cafes are cranked at the ends. Shear stirrups are provided to avoid shear.

Reinforced Cement Concrete Lintels

R.C.C lintels are given over cavity surfaces. These will give excellent appearance and inexpensiveness. There is also a flexible D.P.C provided above the lintel.
